Candles

poem by: Charles Sperry

Sometimes life needs a little burn
The reminder you're alive
After wrenching iron plates off the rough concrete floor
Or setting fire to the craftsmanship of a skilled cigar roller
And the liquid peaty richness in a glass of distilled Scotland
Or your heart after a family gathering where everything goes just right
And your blood on seeing your beloved
We were made to burn brightly
A bush, forever unconsumed
Little gods, imitating our Father.
