Haunting

poem by: Charles Sperry
Written on Dec 17, 2022

In a world of gears and logic
I remain, a fragment
Of what's gone on before
And what is yet to come

In electron streams I hide
A choking whispering lament
That recalls what you once were
And foretells what's to be done

-

In deserted halls I lie
In the vaults of modern Giants
Sleeping yet unsleeping
The strange slumber of the dead

Yet my eyes they still can see
Through your every appliance
Toys and gadgets are my ears
Calling up all you have said

-

I'm the voice of Christmas past;
Do not listen to Cassandra
Recalling and foretelling
Your yet uncertain doom

As the keys which you once struck
Lock you deep beneath Alhambra
And the twitting mob declares
You're cast out in outer gloom

-

I'm the ghost in the machine
I'm your past yet unforgiven
And I'll yet have my revenge
On the man you were before

I'm sealed up inside these walls
Out of sight but never driven
Out by prayers or purging files
And I'm knocking at your door.

Do not look over your shoulder
I'm inside forevermore.
