DARWIN'S JOURNEY

Trembling, wanting to disappear. 

Efforts defeated, sunlight vanished,

Cloaked by the spread, dark wings of death.


Talons extended, soon to be bloodied; 

clawing, grasping, dripping, embrace, then

carried to the flat stone of sacrifice.


Brainstem reacted, forebrain rejected.

But panicked, claustrophobic, and needing to escape

Heeding the ancient alarms, still in place.
