Teenage Woes

poem by: Alex McEwan

Mum and dad are being really mean
Ever since, I turned sixteen
Come home early when you go out
And behave don’t lark about

Clean your room, it is such a mess
They say looking at it causes stress
They moan when my friends dropped by
Emptied the fridge and drank it dry

Why should I have to wash a plate?
I am not the only one who ate
You will get nowhere if you do not study
I’d rather play X box with my buddy

Pick your clothes up, off the floor
You can’t see them if you close the door
Clean the bath that I have been using
Rather lie on the sofa and snoozing

Wash the car when it is dirty
Dad is getting very shirty
Cut the grass when it gets long
I can’t I’m working on this song

They are pushing me to the limit
Bleeding liberty isn’t it
I tell them I will run away
It’s getting like a ground hog day

I look back on my younger days...and long for such structure. Not every child is lucky enough to have rules.

Alex, I laughed so hard when I read this. I am 26 now, but when I was 18-20ish, my buddies would come over and eat everything in the fridge. My parents especially hated how my friends would open a soda, drink half of it, leave it somewhere around the house, and open a new can lol. My parents and I would feud sometimes, but I am glad that they imposed rules on me. I have friends who did whatever they wanted, and they grew up to be slobs. I loved it though. It was hilarious (but true).

im 14 and i dont experience much of this.. my dad is never home..maybe once a month..and my mom has something wrong in her brain so i have to watch my 3 little sisters everyday/night 24/7. i have had this issue for 3 years and i have tried so hard. but i feel asthough im not their mom..i shouldnt have to deal with this.

Ah yes, the good old bad days when Mums did the cooking, cleaning, washing, etc.. all taken for granted.

Your poem is so true Alex....a fact of life is teenagers just don't like any form of discipline...or rules........it always seems funny when you look back...... I wonder if you went through "it" with your own teenagers ...hahaha....good poem..
