A poem for my father.

poem by: Christopher Russon
Written on Apr 01, 2016

He was there
To put me right
When I was going wrong
Times when I was weak
He was there to
Make me strong
He was there
To keep me sheltered
From rain and heavy storms
A guiding light that shone
From the day that I was born.

He was the hand upon my shoulder
A white dove from above
And now that I have grown into a man
His legacy is love.

Good parents aren't everywhere these days, and nor are good kids clever enough to appreciate them. What is a good parent? Being good may seem daunting for Mums and Dads struggling to bring up their children amongst so many distractions for the children (and the parents). Writing as an old Dad, I think the main thing is that they stick around for the child. It's simple and difficult both at once. Being perfect though is not part of it, and the kids appreciate that because it means they feel OK being human too. This is a heartening poem, not the sort of thing I often read but I'm glad I did. Well done, Chris

Hi, The basic structure and the sentiment are very good. However, you need to tighten the poem up through editing. Make each line seven syllables not words. Then the poem will have a more polished smoother flow to it and read more rhythmically having a consistent beat. The idea is very good but that is how to make it smoother and make it even better. Best regards, K River

Christopher Russon Don’t be too quick to be thankful for lame criticism, I did not have the love you shared with your dad, but your poem sure made me cry, it’s raw words coming out of your heart, not a superficial Alice in Wonderland trip. Cherish your thoughts to be real, not polish the pros and cons from critics who cannot see the beauty in your words. more for which it stands.
