Painful Decision

poem by:
Written on Jul 23, 2016

I’ve played by the rules, nearly all of my life,
Been taunted by fools, including my wife.
Ridiculed for sure, up to the nth degree,
Come listen to my story, and soon you will see.
Feelings are best, hidden from others’ sight,
Once they are exposed, turmoil does ignite.
Accusations do fly, in directions all around,
Dubbed the King of Fools, I seem to have been crowned.
Why is it so wrong, to follow my heart just this time?
Honesty and affection seem to be my only crime.
Always pleasing others, do my feelings not count at all?
When I think of myself, they put my back against the wall.
To hell with those of you, who hold me back,
For it’s in your own life, which surely does lack.
Meaning and truth, and a love that endures,
And a place in this world, where you feel secure.
If you were in my place, you wouldn’t think twice,
About making the change, so your life would suffice.
Change can be tough, to those who are involved,
When 20 plus years, are about to be dissolved.
At this stage of the game, I don’t feel I have a choice,
Time to take a deep breath, and speak out with my voice.
My happiness has been removed, for better or worse,
What was once a blessing, has turned into a curse.
I wish her no harm, this is just one of those things,
The nest is too crowded, so it’s time for me to grow wings.
