The Seven Deadly Sins

poem by: Eireann O'Kane
Written on Jan 15, 2017

He paced upon the rocky ash, within his dark abyss,
The world was much too beautiful; he would have none of this.
What can I do to wreak havoc upon this sacred ground?
For years he thought meticulously, until a way was found…

Seven I shall send, each one much worse than the others,
Together they will tear apart, their once beloved brothers.
Their names will haunt forever, growing deep inside,
Lust, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Gluttony, Greed and Pride.

A person I’ll create, to encompass all their traits,
It won’t take long for them to spread, their evil and their hate.
I’ll start with lust, a girl of beauty, no man will dare displease,
Women will scream in jealousy, at this exquisite, devilish tease.

From here Envy will appear, in all her vicious glory,
No better to change the ending, of this once promising story.
A woman of doubt and haste, she moves at lightnings pace,
Spreading her insecurities, with a glint upon her face.

A chaotic world begins to muster; two sins have taken hold,
He laughs at the destruction, how easy they are to mould.
Turmoil begins to swirl, he can hear the hatred sore,
It’s time to throw in anger, there’s always room for more…

A man of little patience, a boiling pot of hate,
I’ll show them how to truly react, before it is too late.
Bloodshed ensues, a river of red, flows throughout the land,
Anger indeed has struck, with the back of his iron hand.

With rage and hatred soaring, his vengeance soon took cloak,
Wrath appeared with violent force and the fire he did poke.
Slaves to themselves, these brothers’ feuds, created a fiery war,
The earth began to crumble, only three to ignite this horror.

Now things were looking up he clapped, his face, a delighted grin,
But something else was missing, amidst this world of sin.
Too much heat and fire will surely burn out, in the end,
I must therefore add to the mix, a bored and sluggish friend…

Sloth appeared inert, waddling with sluggish sorrow,
I’ll show them how to be idle, but I’ll wait until tomorrow.
He taught them how to sleep all day, no need to be so tense,
Love nor hate, feel nothing, indifference makes most sense.

A little child did hear sloths call and decided to decree,
Let them fight among themselves, I’ll look after me.
I’ll eat what I want and do as I please from the day that I am born,
No need for me to send her he smirked, Gluttony herself did form.

I like this girl he said, her selfish voice did lurk,
Another by her side I think, and so he set to work.
Desire was a wonderful thing, a manipulative, treacherous deed,
This sin of avarice for material things, will be known to all as Greed.

The people attacked with mixed emotions, anxiety ridden souls,
Began to fill both hearts and homes, with trouble laden holes.
This is too much fun he cried, gloating in his plan,
How very easy it is, to knock down the all-mighty man!

But knocking down was not enough, they must fall and never rise,
Who can I send to seal this fate? For man was surely wise.
I’ll save the best for last he thought, a stupid and ignorant tide,
To ebb throughout the people, the sin we know as Pride.

A viper of heart, disturber of souls, the most difficult to subdue,
I will keep my superior ignorance alive in every-one of you.
Humility is for the weak, knowledge no man can free,
Pride is all that matters, it’s great to be like me.

From the heavens they looked down, aghast at what took place,
In only a few years, the earth a complete disgrace.
Only seven it took to destroy them all, a lesson to above,
Desire overpowers conviction and hate destroys much love.
