The Willow and the River

poem by: Geoffrey Brewer
Written on Mar 15, 2017

Connoisseurs of riparian worlds will be familiar with the apparent affinity between rivers and willow trees; an attraction that can, in the normal course of events, prove fatal.

THE WILLOW AND THE RIVER
Along the river the willows approach the stream
It's cool invitation calls them to come closer
Slowly they move nearer as in a dream
The subtle seduction gradually taking over
'Til roots dip in to draw life giving sustenance
And they bow in honour and grace for this gift imparted
The union now is sealed with pastoral covenants
Henceforth the two are never to be parted
As water seeps beneath the tree's foundation
The willow leans ever closer to its love
And bowing low to take its final libation
Kisses the surface to nevermore rise above
Then in one climactic plunge does the tree succumb
To unite, dissolve and flow evermore as one

Cecilia Crasto commented:
Beautiful imagery, I love the way you paint a picture with words Geoffrey...true genius.
Arch Angel commented:
Spectacular use of imagery.
Maria Williams commented:
Who would have thought of using a willow and a river in a scene of seduction? So clever Geoffrey , your play on words and the images cast on the mind is incredible. I have tried to set a scene like this with a set of Haikus, I will be posting, Seduction In Spring, where I've been a bit different in casting Spring as a male, being seduced by the beautiful cherry blossom.
Ashok Pokharel commented:
Willow, river, kiss and being oneness- a connection between everything. Well drawn. Nice!
