Deadbeat bar

poem by: Allan P Stevens
Written on Nov 16, 2017

-
In a deadbeat bar in dead end town
Where the bums are drinking all night
Sits a man with sadness in his eyes
As he recalls events from his life
-
They trained him to be a tough soldier
They trained him to slay the foe
But, these days he’s wiser and older
Left with nowhere else to go
-
There’s many a stronger man than I
Been driven down that road to hell
But for good fortune, go you or I
Preferring booze over a padded cell
-
We all must face up to our conscience
For whatever we may have done
No escaping that mental penance
As from ourselves we cannot run
-
In that deadbeat bar in a dead end town
If you see a man with sadness in his eyes
Take care not to judge or put him down
Take the time to ask yourself why
-
