Mother

poem by: Eireann O'Kane
Written on Dec 21, 2017

I was a mother since I was little,
Always playing with dolls,
Feeding, washing, laughing,
Pretending I was a Mum.

I was a mother since I was little,
Always helping my own,
Cleaning, organising, faffing,
Pretending I was a Mum.

I was a mother since I was little,
Always caring for others,
Hugging, talking, mending,
Pretending I was a Mum.

I was a mother before I began trying,
Always waiting for you,
Wishing, dreaming, searching,
Pretending I was a Mum.

I was a mother through years of heartache,
Always hoping for you,
Crying, sleeping, fighting,
Pretending I was a Mum.

I was a mother when you grew inside me,
The happiest I’d ever been,
Smiling, feeling, living,
Finally, I had become a Mum.

I was a mother when your heart stopped beating.
Always. Forever. I’ll be.
Empty. Alone. Afraid.
I was a mother.
