The UN lucky one

poem by: Shaffiate Ishmael
Written on Jan 30, 2018

she puts on her makeup
and wears a dress she bought today
she leaves a list on the table
for the baby sitter’s who is on her way

She's driving on the highway
Going to a life that she regrets
and soon as it's over
she tries her best to forget

Unfamiliar faces greet her
She learns how to pretend
it's the same familiar hotels
But just with different men’

And she remembers
When her life use to be fun
But unlike the hit movie
She was not the lucky one

She thought she had found love
But his heart was cold as stone
because nine months later
She was in hospital bed all alone

With nowhere to go
And a new life to care for
She found a number on the street
And she knocks on a wooden door

Her parents disown her
With a newborn baby in her hands
And this is how the dark side
of her other life began

And she is my good friend
Who I will not disrespect
and I will never judge her
because God made no one perfect

And she is a good girl
With her long beautiful hair
She has compassion in her heart
And it shows everywhere

She helps an old lady
cross the busy street
and she give a homeless ten dollars
and she buys him something to eat

And he said to her “may god bless you
as she smiles and walk away
she has a kind heart
and she shows it every day

she was just the unlucky one
who finds herself in a bad situation
and there was no one to turn too
so, she survives any way that she can

And she is not proud
Of the life that she lives
And what we don’t understand
We have to learn to forgive

And those of us without any sin
You can cast the first stone
And if we can’t throw it
then let’s just leave her alone
