Break the 'Rules'

Rules, Rules, so many Rules, about what is right and wrong
We 'should' do that, we 'should' do this, the list is very long
It's inappropriate to tell him that! No you can't say that to her!
And if you even think of going 'there' you're sure to cause a stir!

You can't go out like that, it's out of fashion, so last year
Heaven forbid that we step out, wearing the 'wrong' gear!
No wonder people experience stress, living in this way
How many things we 'ought' to do, burden our lives each day?

Many are on a treadmill, living by rules, not even aware
Caught up in their programming, like they're not really there
So next time you are doing something, the way you've always done
Ask 'Is this the way that's best for ME? or Is there a better one?'

Because how it's always been, may not be the ideal way
If we're caught up in the past, we're not focused on today
When we're influenced by 'shoulds' and 'oughts', we're living in fear
Instead doing what feels right inside, would seem a better idea

Other people may not like it, we have to face that fact
If we let this thought concern us, our lives are just an act
We'll never be ourselves, we'll never be really free
We'll feel limited in every way, that's not how it should be

There is a great alternative to living in this lie
Stay present to what we do each day, aware of the reason why
For we'll never please all others, so let's concentrate on one
Live our lives in conscious thought, choose love and light, and fun!
