whatever and ever amen

poem by: Brendon Anaya

An altered state of mind
An addiction never conquered
An escape to my heaven
On a path straight down to hell

I ran with everything you had
To try to find my head
All we ever found
A pile of waste instead

Holding on to strings better left to rot
Merely a bandage to cover the wound
Late night discussions and promises
Never again, always again

Years might have gone
Time seems to stand still
I am just a hapless soul
In the blur of memory and present

You tried to make it right
I tried to make amends
But all we really are
is all we've ever been

You are gone now
Better for our sake
Never seen again
All I can really say
Whatever and ever amen
