The Old Brown Car

story by: Karen Norrick

Every morning, around nine a.m., the man from across the street leaves in his old brown car. He sputters down the long hilly road, driving as fast as a snail racing for food, to buy his daily groceries of coffee donuts and a meal for the day. At three p.m. he checks his mail only to find the mail box empty. Since his wife died, three years ago, he has seemed so sad and lonely; I really should go visit him and tell him he's not alone.
One Christmas, it was really Christmas Eve, I made some cookies of all different kinds: sugar cookies in shapes of bells, angels, santas and stars with icing of white, pink, red and green with sprinkles of red. I carefully carried a platter of my delicious cookies, with a pot of English Tea to my lonely neighbor; in hopes of giving him a cheerful Christmas. I knocked on his door with a smile on my face. When he answered I said, " Merry Christmas! I have brought you some cookies and tea: a gift from me to you." The man invited me in and we ate the cookies, drank the tea and sang Christmas songs and laughed all day and night til the clock struck midnight.. When I left I hugged him and I said, " you are never alone. I am always here and God is always with you. " He smiled and said thank you and wished me a wonderful Christmas...
When daylight came, I watched as he got into his old brown car and sputtered down the long hilly road... I waited for him to return home, so I could visit him on this wondrous day. I smiled and giggled as he parked his car, but he wouldn't get out of his car. I prayed to God that my new friend was alright and ran over to find out why he wouldn't leave his car.. I opened the door and felt his pulse. He was cold as ice. I called emergency and rescue; they checked him and said, " I am sorry to tell you this, but he is passed on. " I turned and quietly left and saw a package by my mailbox. I opened it: it was a box of chocolates with a card attached. " Thank you for the cookies and tea. But, most of all, thank you for the laughter and happiness you brought into my home. This has truly been a most joyful Christmas." " God Bless You. I will see you in Heaven."
